Local reception knowledge
The North Downs shield Reigate from Crystal Palace, so the town has its own transmitter on Reigate Hill, just north of the town near the M25. It carries the full Freeview line-up with BBC London and ITV London news, and most Reigate homes take their signal from it.
Being so close to the transmitter usually means a strong signal. Problems tend to come from the hills and trees within the town itself, from ageing aerials and cables, or occasionally from an aerial still pointing at Crystal Palace when Reigate would be far better.
If the signal is very strong, an amplifier can do more harm than good, overloading the TV and causing the picture to break up. It’s one of the less obvious faults we find in Reigate, and removing or adjusting the amplifier fixes it.
