Local reception knowledge

Dorking: below the Downs

Dorking sits in the Mole valley, just south of Box Hill and the North Downs. That high ground blocks the direct signal from Crystal Palace for much of the town, so most homes use one of two local transmitters instead.

The Reigate transmitter, on Reigate Hill, carries the full Freeview line-up with BBC London news. Dorking also has its own small relay, serving around 3,700 homes, but it’s Freeview Light: it carries the public service channels only. Homes tuned to it can be missing channels without realising, and realigning to Reigate usually brings them back.

Out in the villages, around Westcott, Brockham, Capel and Ockley, woodland and the rolling ground of the Weald add to the challenge. In those spots, a taller mast or a satellite system with Freesat can be the more reliable option, and we’ll tell you honestly which suits your home.

Repair first

We find the fault before we quote

A new aerial isn’t always the answer. We measure the signal first and fix what’s actually wrong.

01

Picture breaking up

Usually water in the cable, a corroded connector or a misaligned aerial.

We measure signal quality, not just strength, and fix the cause.

02

No signal on the TV

The TV input, a loose lead, an amplifier or the aerial.

We trace where the fault starts: the TV, the socket or the roof.

03

Channels missing after a retune

Often the wrong transmitter, or a relay that doesn’t carry every channel.

We check which transmitter suits your address, then retune.

04

Worse in wind and rain

Loose fixings and water in the connectors.

We secure the aerial and replace damaged cable so it holds up.

Dorking & the surrounding area

Market-town streets and Mole Valley villages

Dorking has period homes in and around the town centre, Victorian and Edwardian houses on the slopes to the south and west, and village homes across the Mole Valley. Older town-centre buildings often need a discreet aerial or dish position, and a loft aerial can sometimes work.

We cover Dorking and the surrounding villages across RH4 and RH5. Give us your full postcode when you call and we’ll confirm the visit.

Dorking aerial questions

Answers before you book

Why am I missing channels in Dorking?

Your aerial is probably pointing at the Dorking relay, which only carries the public service channels. Realigning to Reigate, sometimes with a different aerial, usually gives you the full Freeview line-up.

Can I get Freeview at all in the villages around Dorking?

In most places, yes, but some homes in dips or near woodland struggle. If the aerial signal isn’t good enough, Freesat via a satellite dish is a reliable alternative.

Do you cover Westcott, Brockham and Capel?

Yes, along with Betchworth, North Holmwood, Mickleham, Box Hill, Westhumble and Ockley.

How much will it cost?

We’ll give you a price on the phone for most jobs and confirm it before we start. No surprises on the day.

Do I still need an aerial if I switch to Freely?

Freely streams live TV over broadband, so it can work without one. Most people keep their aerial as a backup for when the internet drops. We’ll tell you honestly whether yours is worth keeping.
